Eduardo Castro was project manager for the structural engineering design of a new air base school facility which includes the Elementary/Middle school and the High School.
The two-story complex is organized around a central tower that separates the two schools. A large multipurpose room linking the structures doubles as auditorium and cafeteria and a central plaza serves as a focal point for athletic and cultural events.
Covered arcades, either incorporated into adjacent structures or stand-alone, connect the buildings.
The schools were subdivided into several structures to accommodate efficient structural framing and seismic design requirements. The primary school consists of a three-story rectilinear building and two two-story buildings. The secondary school has a three-story rectilinear wing, a two-story library and locker room building and a large gymnasium.
The building foundations were constructed so that tie beams and grade beams around the perimeter create a single cast-in-place concrete base.
Steel trusses were used for long-span gymnasiums and multipurpose facility roofs.
