Eduardo Castro was project manager for the upgrade of the existing Port Authority Bus Terminal façade in Manhattan to minimize potential injuries and fatalities resulting from an explosive event. Different potential upgrades were compared based on their effectiveness in reducing hazard, ease of installation, impact on aesthetics and existing MEP systems and cost. The exterior perimeter columns were reinforced, the glazing was retrofitted with a cable catch system and bollards were installed around the perimeter of the terminal. The performance of the cable catch system was verified with a full scale blast test.
